INTERPRETING SERVICES

Interpretation is an action of adapting the spoken content in one language and converting it for the listener to perceive or understand it. Language interpretation means to render the spoken or the signed message into the target spoken or the signed language. The language interpreter has to preserve the meaning and the intent of the content.

The interpreter is a mediator between the spoken or the signed language and the receiver of the content. The receiver can be from different regions and the languages.

These interpreters have to be quick and accurate while perceiving the information and also maintain the tone and the intent of the original message into the rendered content.

There is an accurate difference between translations and interpretation. Both require different skill sets. The translators render written text or audiovisual content, whereas the interpreter transforms the spoken language orally. Translation and interpretation require a thorough knowledge of the languages and cultures.

Why Does a Business Require Interpreting Services?

When the business wants to expand their horizon internationally, they need to understand the necessity to hire the interpreter. Especially when the meeting involves important things such as the closure of the deed or signing the financial contracts. Business interpretation is a highly skilled job. It needs experience, knowledge of the subject matter, and expertise in both the source and the target language. Businesses can opt for interpretation for business meetings, e-conferences, overseas staff training, HR consultations, business visits in foreign countries. Do not get confused about your need for a translator or an interpreter. Understand the difference. The translation is required for text or audio-visual work. On the other hand, interpretation is necessary for live business events. The interpreter translates the spoken words and the translator translates the written words.

Characteristics of Business Interpreting Services-

  • The interpreter has to be an active listener and prompt speaker. It is a skillful job that requires concentration and focus. They need to be fluent in business tones other than just being fluent in source and target language.
  • They have to be very precise and quick while interpreting the context and maintaining the formal tone at the same time.
  • The business interpreters are present in the conferences or meetings doing the either simultaneous or consecutive interpretation. They make sure that the participants can speak in their comfort language and get feedback in the same.
  • The interpreter makes sure that all the necessary literature of the meeting or the conference is understood by the receivers. They handle presentations, speeches, discourses, or the conversation properly so that the participants can concentrate on the main meeting.
  • Sometimes, the interpreter is also required for business negotiations. So they should be skilled in the negotiation too.
  • Understanding cultural differences is a must for a business interpreter. He/she should know all the dos and don’ts from both cultures.
  • Body language is another thing that the interpreter has to understand. To ensure the accuracy of the text interpreter should be able to understand the other non-verbal cues too. For the clear message conveyance, the interpreter should observe the body language and at the same time listen to the content that he/she is sharing.

BENEFITS OF BUSINESS INTERPRETING

Apt Business communication is an integral part of business growth. For the widening of the business, many entrepreneurs approach global partners. They communicate with each other through various meetings, conferences, or seminars. When their language requirements do not meet, they need an interpreter. Businesses prefer hiring professional interpretation services as it can benefit them in the following way-

  • High Quality- To get the better quality and consistency of the work, businesses can work with the same service provider for both translation and interpretation. It ensures that the provided interpreters are professional and highly qualified in the field. They have gained expertise in languages, cultural differences, and business knowledge too.
  • Intercultural Knowledge- The service providers allocate the interpreter based on knowledge of the language and the cultures of both parties. These trained interpreters are thorough about the cultural differences and they can help with the specific clarification throughout the business meetings to make sure that nothing goes off track.
  • Impartial Communication- The interpreter converts the content by being neutral. As they are hired by the service provider they will convey the right message to the receiver. Interpreters maintain the tone and also try to give the message by interpreting all the non-verbal cues. During business communications, misinterpretation of any single word may cause differences. The interpreter makes sure to adhere to the main content.
  • Specialization- Lots of interpreters have extensive knowledge about certain industries. Some of the interpreters also hold degrees in different fields. It is helpful for businesses when they’ll need an interpreter related to that genre. So, when businesses plan to approach the agency, they can ask for an interpreter who is possibly a subject matter expert.

INTERPRETATION SERVICES VS. TRANSLATION SERVICES

Translation and interpretation both in the process of rendering the content from source language to target language but in a different way. This example will make it simpler to understand. A company from India is dealing with a Spanish company. They are holding a conference or a meeting but their languages are not similar. English cannot be the mid-way too. At this time, an interpreter will be a mediator. He/she will perceive, translate and decode the content in the language of the receiver. But in the same case, when there are minutes of the meeting notes are in Spanish language, it needs a translation. The translation and interpretation are two different things. But, interpretation involves translation. Following are the 5 major points that differ translations from interpretation-

  1. Format of the Content- Translation is done for the written text. And interpretation is for the live spoken languages. Both require rendering the language from the source to target in the different formats.
  2. Delivery Time- Interpretation is on-the-spot delivery. Interpreters need to be too quick and accurate as they may miss out on the points if they delay. It is a live delivery like a commentary. Translations are in text format. The time required for the delivery of the translation depends on the length of the document. It cannot be given on the spot. The translation takes ample time to translate high quality.
  3. Accuracy- Interpreters try to achieve an accuracy as fast as they can. But there are chances of leaving the loopholes. On the translation side, the translator has a lot of time, and the level of accuracy is higher than the interpreters.  Since it is a live interpretation, a service giver cannot go back to the time to do it. But translators can read the document again and again before making it a final one.
  4. The Direction of Work- Interpretation is a two-way process. They have to encode and decode the information at the same time.  The translation goes in one direction. The translator can take time to understand the content, process it, make a suitable list of keywords and style guides, and then actually do the work. Interpreters do not have time to refer to anything like things.
  5. Verbal and Non-verbal Cues- The interpreter has to understand and decode all the verbal and non-verbal cues. Missing out on any of these may result in the misinterpretation of the source content. They need to capture the tone, phrases, voice qualities, and voice inflection to transmit the message correctly. Translation does not require all this, as everything is in written format.

Once you understand the difference between translation and interpretation, it will be easier for you to choose between them.

TYPES OF INTERPRETATION SERVICES

It is difficult to choose between the various types of interpretation. Following is the list-

Legal Interpreting Services

Legal interpretation is when the statutes need to be explained in general terms. For example, the lawyer is reading someone’s will and the family needs extra explanation. They will need a legal interpreter. This interpreter will explain what the lawyer is saying in understandable language. Mostly the language of the lawyer or the interpreter and the receiver is the same. Sometimes the lawyer works as an interpreter too. This type of interpretation rarely needs translations too.

EUO Interpreting Services

EUO stands for Examination Under Oath. It is an important activity performed by the insurer to check the proofs of loss which will help them avoid possible frauds. Any misinterpretation of the proofs can cause a loss to the insurance company.

Video remote/Conference Interpreting Services

Popularly known as VRIs,  Video Remote Interpretation is a process of interpreting video conferences for those who do not understand the language or for the audience with hearing impairment. An interpreter transmits the message to the audience in their understandable language. The mediator is given the specific quality of headphones and microphone. Sitting at the call center, the interpreter explains the receiver through the video camera. The translator watches the action, translates the content, and reverts to the audience.

Simultaneous Interpreting

It is a real-time or live interpretation of the event. The interpreter translates the content from source to target language while the program is on. To provide the apt interpretation the service giver has to do the following three things at a time-

  1. Listen the content
  2. Analyze the content
  3. Reproduce the same content in the target language.

Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpretation is just the opposite of what simultaneous interpretation is. In this process the speaker speaks, then the interpreter takes the necessary notes, and then represents the same content in the target language. The speaker waits till the interpreter finishes his turn. The interpreter sits near the speaker with a notepad and pen to jot down the important points. Consecutive interpreters have to wait till the speaker stops and starts when the interpreters turn to speak.

Escort Interpreting

The escort interpreter works as an assistant to the client. They are also called travel interpreters. When the client is traveling around the world for business trips, the escort interpreters help them navigate through. They also accompany the client for international meetings, conferences, or seminars.

Other than providing the interpretations, these escort interpreters also work as cultural referrals for the clients. These interpreters also help the client order food and also to close the business deed.

Over-the-Phone/Telephone Interpreting

It is a three-way interpretation that includes the client, the person on the call, and the interpreter. The interpreter can be available in the same place or somewhere else. It is possible to have it over the conference calls. The benefit of remote or over-the-phone interpreting is that it can be done anytime. You can reach the interpreter 24*7. It is more cost-effective than at any other time.

Face to Face Interpreting Services

It is a traditional way of interpretation. This is when the speaker, the receiver, and the interpreter are in the same room facing each other for the discussion. These services are mostly demanded last-minute requirements such as healthcare issues or police interviews.

Sign Language Interpreting Services

As the name suggests, sign language interpretation is for the audience with hearing impairment. The sign language interpreter stands near the main speaker of the event. They present the content in sign language. They are provided with high-quality headsets to understand the context. As there are various sign languages too, there are interpreters who can coordinate and interpret between two spoken and two different sign languages.

Ad-hoc/Liaison Interpreting

It is more of a less formal interpretation. For example a visit to a foreign hospital or a small informal meet. The ad-hoc interpreter works as a mediator between the client and the host. In this, the conversations can be informal too.

TOP INDUSTRIES REQUIRE INTERPRETING SERVICES

Globalization has opened doors for various businesses. Hence there was a sudden emergence of the various translation services. The interpretation is the oldest one amongst. The demand for this service too increased suddenly after the world opened doors for international business. Following industries has high demand for interpreting services-

Healthcare

With the recent pandemic situation, we have understood the importance of interpreters. Whenever there was an address by the WHO representative, there always was an interpreter present who was transmitting the info in sign languages. An interpretation can do a lot of good in the healthcare sector. Healthcare providers need interpreters to understand the patient’s language. It helps the healthcare provider to understand the suffering and diagnose the issue to further give the proper treatment.

Legal Interpretations

When the case is held in a foreign country, the interpreters provide a helping hand. To provide an accurate case hearing, the legal interpreter translates what the witness is saying.  The interpreters have to be neutral in the case hearings. He or she shall not be biased towards anyone party as it can put the entire case to the toss.

Entertainment and News

There are many concerts in which the sign language interpreters are present. Also, using sign language interpreters in the TV or radio news is a traditional method. Other than the sign languages, the multilingual interpreters in the entertainment and news industry pull up extra viewers and engagement.

Travel and Tourism

The travel and tourism industry also demands interpreters to expand their business. Not all travelers will understand one language. It is necessary to have interpreters in the industries. You must have seen sign language interpreters in the airline industry. They provide safety and security instructions in sign languages for travelers with hearing impairment to understand the same. When the booking agency has an interpreter, it helps them gain a reputation. The commuter can talk in his or her native language at the ticketing center if the interpreter is present at the counter.

With e-learning at its spur, many e-learning apps emphasize having interpreters explaining the content in different languages or sign language. Many international schools have foreign students. Sometimes not all the classes are held in an understandable language. At such times the interpreter is required to explain the topic.

Training and Consultancy

Companies hire employees on an international level to broaden their business. They need to provide the training for those who have recently joined but are located far away in a different country. They may not understand the employer’s language. In such situations, when there is more than one language involved and the audience is at different venues, the training is provided through web seminars. In such situations, the live interpreters are present in local offices or online. They help new joiners to understand the context.

HOW LONG DOES BUSINESS INTERPRETING TAKE?

Business interpretation takes place in live events. It will take as long as the program is going on. There is no definite answer to this. The interpreter has to be present as long as a meeting, conference, or seminar is going on.

HOW MUCH DOES A BUSINESS INTERPRETING COST?

The pricing of the interpretation depends on the below-mentioned factors-

  1. The charges of the interpreter- The interpreter’s charges depend on the time. There are half-day rates, full-day rates, and extra charges for additional hours. Half-day rates are up to 4 hours. Full-day rates are up to 8 hours.  The per-day charges are dependent on the language combinations and the type of interpreter. The interpreter may charge extra for events at nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  2. Travel and stay expenses – When the event is overnight, there are travel and stay requisitions that need to be fulfilled. This adds to the pocket of the client
  3. Equipment cost- Certain types of interpretations require high-end equipment such as headphones and microphones. An agency has to invest some amount on this too. Some interpreters may need something different than what is already there. A client might have to spend on it. Not all interpreters will demand this.
